Lyon township has nearly doubled its population in two decades, growing from 11,041 residents in 2000 to 20,975 in 2019. Industry is a strength, as Lyon is home to Testek and Bielomatik. Testek designs and builds test equipment for the aerospace, industrial and alternative energy industries. It’s a major defense supplier to the U.S. military. Bielomatik designs and builds plastic welding machinery for the automotive industry.
Allendale (29% growth)
Allendale township is a Grand Rapids suburb that grew by 6,001 residents – from 20,708 to 26,709 – from 2010 to 2019. Allendale is home to Grand Valley State University. The median property value in 2020 was $217,300. The median household income is about $58,000. The most popular occupations are in food preparation (13%), administrative support (12%) and sales (10%).
Oceola (24% growth)
Oceola township is located in Livingston County. It grew by 2,839 residents – from 11,973 to 14,812 – from 2010 to 2019. This population boom has been incredible, considering Oceola was home to only 8,362 people in 2020. The median household income is $76,139. The job market in Oceola and the neighboring county seat of Howell is diversified, with 11% of the workforce in sales, 11% in production, 10% in management, 10% in food service, and another 10% in administrative support.
Byron (23% growth)
Byron township grew by 4,589 residents – from 20,324 to 24,913 – from 2010 to 2019. Located in Kent County, Byron is part of the Grand Rapids metropolitan area. Like Allendale, Byron’s explosion has been driven by Grand Rapids’ growth – “GR” has topped national rankings in economic and housing growth in recent years. Caledonia (21% growth)
Caledonia township grew by 2,550 residents – from 12,340 to 14,890 – from 2010 to 2019. Like the other communities on this list, it has seen rapid growth over the past two decades: In 2000 the township was home to fewer than 9,000 people. The median household income in Caledonia township is $63,032. Caledonia also is part of the thriving Grand Rapids metropolitan area.
