How to Move During the Holidays

Ho! Ho! Ho! It looks like Santa is giving you the gift of a new home for the holidays, isn’t that exciting? While you may not be thrilled to make this move during such a hectic time, it is the moving industry’s “slower season” making it the perfect time for discounted services. To help with your move, here are 4 tips to making the most out of your holiday transition.

Organize, Donate and Pack

There’s no better time to donate to places such as Good Will or The Salvation Army than during the holiday season. When you’re organizing and sorting, we always recommend making 3 piles: trash, donate and pack. Now more than ever that “donate” pile should be sky high so you can move without the hassle of bringing EVERYTHING. Talk to your kids about the importance of giving on the holidays to help make this task easier for them to get on board with.

One tip for making the move as magical as possible: make the Christmas décor easily available so it can be one of the first things you access upon moving into your new home.

Timing

For the same reason that summertime is the busiest time of year for moving companies, absolutely take advantage of the kids being out of school for the holidays. Many companies won’t even be open on Christmas or Christmas Eve so your best bet is to use the days leading up to Christmas to pack and clean the house. To make things easier, celebrate the holidays at a family member’s house (remember all your pots and pans are in boxes now) or eat out for Christmas dinner. Hopefully you already booked the first available day after your moving company reopens to make your move as early as possible and use the rest of the days off from school to travel, adjust and get settled.

Weather

If you live in an area with poor weather throughout the winter you will certainly want to take this into consideration. For us here at All Around Moving and Storage, we’re intimately familiar with cold weather, snow and icy conditions so our team is overly prepared for anything. Make sure you keep your walkways clear and lay cardboard down in the entryways to prevent getting the carpets muddy again after cleaning.

Make a Little Magic

For those of you with little ones, the move during the holidays can be extra tough. If you do need to move ON Christmas or just after, use the magic of Christmas to help excite them. Tell your kids that you already informed Santa of your new home address and have “Santa” leave a note for the kids explaining that all the gifts are waiting for them there- now they’ll be more than excited to make the move. If you can make it happen without the kids seeing- and this is definitely a team effort type of thing- bring the gifts in before the kids walk through the front doors and then sit back and watch their excitement!
