Moving Terms You’ll Want to Know

Congratulations- you’ve found a new home! Nothing can be more exciting than taking the steps to move into a new home- either around the corner or possibly across the country. Whether it’s a small move or big, we want to help you become familiar with the top moving terminology you’ll want- and need- to know!

Accessorial Services

Services that are performed at the customer’s request that fall outside of normal transportation services, such as: packing, unpacking and extra. Charges for these services are in addition to the typical transportation costs.

Agent

A moving company that is affiliated and authorized to act on behalf of the nationwide moving company, such as All Around Moving is an agent of National Van Lines. An agent can authorize the booking, origin, hauling and/or destination services.

Bill of Lading

A customer’s receipt or contract for the agreed upon move. The customer’s signature acknowledges that the goods can be loaded on the van and released to the carrier and is incredibly important to understand before signing.

Binding/ Non-binding estimate

A binding estimate is when an agreement is made in advance that guarantees the total cost of the move based on the quantity of items and services shown on the estimate. A non-binding estimate is similar to a quote based on the estimated weight of the shipment and the accessorial services requested. A non-binding estimate is not final the end charges will be based on the final weight and tariff provisions in effect on the day of the load.

Inventory

A detailed list of the items in the shipment and the condition they were in prior to being loaded onto the van.

Non-Allowable List

A list of all of the items a carrier will not accept on the van that will contaminate or damage (i.e., bug infestations, chemicals, propane tanks, etc.) the carrier’s property or the property of other customers.

Overflow

The result of insufficient space on the primary van, resulting in items being left behind for a second van to retrieve and deliver.

Peak Season Rates

Increased rates for moving resulting from the date of the move falling in the busiest months of the year for the moving industry.

Storage-In-Transit (SIT)

The temporary storage of items, at the carrier’s storage location, in between pick up and delivery destinations.

Third Party Charges

The additional charges for services that are performed by a third party at the request of the customer and paid for by the mover are added to the charges on the Bill of Lading.

Unpacking

Is the act of removing the customer’s items from containers or boxes and placing them on a flat surface. Additionally, it includes the disposal of said containers and packing materials.
