Residential Move Checklist: Simplify Your Move to the Detroit Suburbs

residential move detroit suburbs

You’re moving to the Detroit suburbs, and your to-do list is so overwhelming, you don’t know where to start.

We’re here to help! Use this checklist and simplify your move by tackling this transition one step at a time.

Before moving day

  • Hire professional movers. Before you pack a single box or bin, schedule a professional crew to handle your treasures. When it comes to Detroit-area residential movers, you’ll find none better than All-Around Moving and Storage.
  • Get organized one room at a time. Now that you’ve hired professional movers, it’s time to get packing. Don’t wait to get started: Set aside one day of preparation for every room you’re packing up, including the basement and attic. Start with areas and items you don’t use every day. Pack up out-of-season clothing, family heirlooms and holiday decorations before you get to day-to-day items.
  • Start purging. Packing is an ideal time to get rid of unneeded items. Divide your possessions into three categories: Keep, trash and sell/donate. If you don’t want to hold a garage sale, drop off items you no longer need at a thrift store. Try to travel light!
  • Collect moving boxes and put packing supplies – markers, tape, bubble wrap and labels – in a central location. Mark boxes and bins containing fragile items.
  • Involve your children. Moving with kids in the Detroit suburbs can come with unique challenges and opportunities. Harness their energy and keep them occupied by asking them to help with the move. They can pack up their own toys and clothes, and perhaps identify unwanted items to be culled.
  • Call your service providers. Make sure your accounts with the power company and water utility are closed at your old address and open at your new one.
  • Keep key items handy on moving day. Fill one bin with items you’ll need immediately during and after the move: Cleaning supplies, toilet paper, medications and activities for kids. Prepare an emergency kit, too.

On moving day

  • Conduct a walk-through. Before turning in your keys, walk through your old home to ensure you didn’t forget anything.
  • Don’t overdo it. Avoid overloading boxes, or carrying too much weight in a single trip. Use hand trucks and dollies. Pace yourself. Moving is a marathon, not a sprint.
  • Protect the floors. Set down rugs and mats to ensure dirt isn’t tracked in. Use furniture gliders to protect your new floors. Toss moving blankets over valuable items to prevent scratches and chips.
  • Tip your movers. This amount may vary based on your level of satisfaction, but a good rule of thumb is $5 per mover per hour. Consider providing a cooler of drinks for the crew, too.
  • Change the locks. If you own the home you’ve just moved into in the Detroit suburbs, change the door locks to ensure security.
