TRANSPLANTS GUIDE TO MICHIGAN SPORTS

michigan sports

It’s only one day a year in the sports world, but it feels so much bigger. It can be called the best rivalry in all of sports, depending on the person you ask. But for one Saturday each year, there is a mantra you must learn now that you have moved to Michigan.

BEAT OHIO STATE.

You have reached the best movers in Michigan and hired your long-distance movers in Ann Arbor and now find yourself wanting to know about the local sports scene. There is so much to watch each year in Michigan sports — some good and some you want to be good then they send your franchise quarterback to the LA Rams, and they win a Super Bowl.

So, here’s a transplants guide to Michigan sports. It will make you wonder how all the teams can win a title except one. But who doesn’t love the Detroit Lions? They’re like fierce kitties of the NFL. And some day they will roar again. Just you watch.

NFL

DETRIOT LIONS

OK, there are two NFL teams that used to be great in the era before the Super Bowl, but Cleveland and Detroit have the longest streaks in the NFL without ever making it do the big game. It will be a dream scenario if they ever play each other in the Super Bowl. That way someone would have to win. There’s no tie in this game. So, here’s what you need to know about the Lions.

This is the second year of head coach Dan Campbell. They only won three games last year, but they played hard and were in most games. That’s why expectations are high this year. Maybe not the playoffs just yet, but a winning season is possible. They have nine home games this year and there were many changes in the division with other teams.

The former Rams quarterback Jared Goff who now plays for the Lions showed flashes of winning last season. And he will build on that this year. The Lions are the team everyone wants to see win something. And this team could be the feel-good story of the NFL this year.

MLB

DETROIT TIGERS

The Tigers have been in a rebuild since they made the World Series in 2012. This year they currently sit 12 games out of first place and are still trying to find their winning ways. They have pieces like Miguel Cabrera, Dustin Garneau and Harold Castro. What they need is pitching. They are still looking for an ace on this team. They will be sellers most likely at the trade time in July. Key here, enjoy the sun. Just don’t expect a winning season yet. (And if you want to check out what it’s like to cheer for a team that’s won the World Series in the last couple years, check out this blog about Georgia sports teams!)

NBA

DETROIT PISTONS

The Bad Boys of the NBA are no longer. This team has simply been BAD. But they are on the move in the right direction. They had a great draft last week selecting No. 5 pick Jaden Ivey and adding Jalen Duren in a trade. So this team is building around a young group. And they will try making a big splash in free agency. Phoenix center Deandre Ayton would be a great pick up if they can pull that off. This team could go from worst to playoffs quickly.

NHL

DETROIT RED WINGS

The Stanley Cup finished last week. And the Detroit Red Wings were not part of that. This team will look to get back to their winning ways soon. They will have to make some roster decisions. The team is building around some young talent and will look to add to that. Moritz Seider, Lucas Raymond and Robby Fabbri are locks to stay with the team. To remember the state on good terms with the sport, lets throw it back 1996 and the legendary goal from 1996 NCAA game between the University of Michigan and University of Minnesota. This Hockey move is now coined as the ‘Michigan Goal’.

COLLEGE SPORTS

MIGHIGAN FOOTBALL

Jim Harbaugh saved his job by beating Ohio State last year and making it to the national championship game, losing to Georgia. Expect another great team on the field this year with quarterback Cade McNamara who will be pushed by J.J. McCarthy for playing time.

MICHIGAN STATE FOOTBALL

The Spartans had a great year last year with an 11-2 record, but did not win the conference. Some early predictions have this as a Top 10 team this year.

MICHIGAN BASKETBALL

Juwan Howard is a coach that is getting things done at Michigan. Love him or not, his teams are making the NCAA tournament each year and expect more of the same this season.

MICHIGAN STATE BASKETBALL

Never bet against Tom Izzo. He is one of the best coaches ever in college basketball. Look for this team to finish in the top half of the Big Ten standings again with another trip to the NCAA tourney in March.
